[ Hyundai E&C honored with the Best Innovation Award ]
Hyundai E&C has once again proven its unmatched expertise in BIM technology by consecutively winning top honors at Korea's most prestigious BIM competition.
On November 21 (Thurs.), Hyundai E&C announced that it had been honored with the “Best Innovation Award (Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Award)” in the BIM category of the ‘2024 Smart Construction Challenge’. Now in its fifth year, the Smart Construction Challenge is organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to promote and showcase outstanding smart construction technologies. The competition is organized by related institutions across five technology fields, including safety management, complex/residences, roads, railways, and building information modeling (BIM). With this latest award, Hyundai E&C has accomplished the remarkable feat of winning the Challenge for four consecutive years.
Hyundai E&C, in collaboration with Woosong University, Taesung SNI, Glotech, and UCORE System, developed and presented the ‘Integrated Management Technology and Process for Optimizing the Construction Project Management Environment in Korea Using Korean BIM Software’. This technology was applied to the “Wolgot-Pangyo Section 6” site, demonstrating ▲ BIM-based design safety reviews, ▲ monthly safety training using 4D simulations, ▲ AR-based safety management, ▲ CDE*-based design issue management, and ▲ BIM-based construction plan reviews. It was highly commended for demonstrating its practical applicability in real-world site management.

On the 19th, Hyundai E&C was honored with the grand prize, the “President's Award of the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology(KICT)”, in the Construction category at the ‘BIM AWARDS 2024’. Jointly organized by BuildingSMART Korea and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, the BIM AWARDS aims to advance Korea's construction industry and facilitate the proper dissemination of BIM technology. The competition recognizes exemplary cases that have significantly contributed to the activation of BIM in the construction sector. Hyundai E&C has consistently demonstrated its leadership in BIM, earning numerous accolades in this competition, including the grand prize (Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Award) in 2017 and 2021.
This time, Hyundai E&C showcased the successful application of BIM in an overseas railway EPC project for the first time in the Korean construction industry through the ‘BIM-based Collaborative Design Process for the Panama Metro Line 3 Project’. Hyundai E&C, in collaboration with Linetek System, submitted the project, which involved the design of 14 stations and 21 depot buildings using BIM. The project demonstrated achievements such as ▲ CDE-based collaborative design among more than 370 engineers ▲ resolution of more than 13,000 design clashes and issues in advance ▲ generation of more than 18,000 BIM-based drawings ▲ response to up to 60 design changes and revisions ▲ 3D design reviews for specialized construction equipment such as TBMs ▲ and development of asset management models for HVAC systems and fire protection facilities, receiving high recognition for presenting a BIM execution process optimized for large-scale overseas EPC projects.
“We have developed a robust BIM working system by implementing customized strategies and standardizing internal policies, with a dedicated BIM organization at its core, while actively promoting technological advancements and their application in the field,” said a Hyundai E&C official. “We will continue to enhance our BIM capabilities through consistent efforts and lead the digital transformation of the construction industry by expanding opportunities for demonstration and practical application of advanced technologies in collaboration with various competitive companies in the smart construction sector, including BIM.”
