Saeul Units 1 and 2 (formerly known as Shin Kori Units 3 and 4) are Korea’s first third-generation nuclear power plants, equipped with the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MW (APR 1400), a new generation of light water reactors. These reactors are designed to withstand earthquakes up to a magnitude of 7.0 and have an extremely low meltdown risk, estimated at 1 in 1 million. The design life of the reactors has also been extended from 40 to 60 years. Construction of Saeul Units 1 and 2 began in September 2007, over two years before Korea secured its first nuclear power plant export contract for the Barakah NPP in the UAE. This project was highly significant for both Korea and Hyundai E&C, as it demonstrated the outstanding performance of the APR 1400.
*In November 2022, the Saeul NPP Headquarters renamed Shin Kori Units 3-6 to Saeul Units 1-4 to align the plant’s name with the headquarters.
*Meltdown: A severe nuclear accident where the reactor core melts down.
