Yeosu New North Port Construction Project

In harmony between cutting-edge facilities and beautiful views
Hyundai E&C has created a remarkable landmark again. Yeosu New North Port is visited by many local residents and tourists who want to enjoy the ocean view as the new port has emerged as a new tourist destination.
The 1,360-meter-long Yeosu New North Port located in Deokchung-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanamdo has various waterfront facilities such as a lighthouse, a sundial, an observatory, and even an organ. Above all things, the sea organ, the world’s second and Korea’s first architectural sound instrument, converts rushing waves into soothingly natural music. It is quite amusing to hear the everchanging chords made by the different height of waves lapping against the organ. A smile spreads across the faces of visitors while they enjoy the picturesque views of the port city and the sea, and the unique sounds of the wave organ.

Hyundai E&C changes the paradigm of port facilities
The Yeosu New North Port project, promoted by the Yeosu Regional Office of Oceans & Fisheries, was designed to build a new port to be substituted for the existing Yeosu New Port closed due to the opening of Expo 2012 Yeosu. Hyundai E&C is in charge of a 126.2-billion-won deal aimed to build 1,360-meter-long counter facilities. It is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
Korea’s primary builder received the project on a turnkey basis, based on its extensive experience in port construction and accumulated technological knowledge. Hyundai E&C paid careful attention to reflecting the forecasts of the rising sea level caused by global warming: The builder strove to improve the stability of the structure with the best earthquake resistant design and secure calm waters by prohibiting wave overtopping.
Since the commencement of construction in 2015, the construction site has made its all-out efforts to achieve the stability of the ground through combining full dredging and replacement method and deep cement mixing method as well as to build a solid foundation with the use of carefully selected rock riprap, riprap protection, and tetrapods.
As the construction site had gigantic equipment including 4,000-ton floating cranes and concrete blocks weighing 10 to 130 tons moving around all the time, the workers could not feel at ease even for a moment. What made them the most concerned about was harsh weather conditions. In 2016, typhoon Chaba with maximum wave height of 15 meters and maximum wind speed of 22.7㎧ demolished a half of the rubble mound breakwater. Although the devastating incident delayed the construction schedule by three months, the workers at the construction site, relevant departments of the head office and subcontractors worked hard together to manage the schedule, which led to completing the project on time and holding a building dedication ceremony on October 16 as originally scheduled.
At the port, the beautifully delicate sound of the sea attracts visitors taking a walk along the seaside. The incoming waves of the tide move 30 pipes, playing natural songs of the sea. The sea organ, the world’s second after one located in Zadar, Croatia, draws the most attention from visitors in the newly completed port.
In addition, various sculptures such as a sundial, a heart-shaped structure made of optical fiber, illusion artworks and a pipe organ-shaped lighthouse make the picturesque mood of the sea more enjoyable. On the top of the observatory visitors can also enjoy the terrific view of merchant vessels berthing at the port against the vast ocean.
