Introduction to the Social Contribution Strategies and Key Activities of Hyundai Motor Group and Hyundai E&C

The Right Move
for the Right Future

Hyundai E&C, based on the social contribution vision and slogan of the Hyundai Motor Group, strives to collaborate with local communities through strategic social contributions tailored to the characteristics of the construction industry, aiming to be a global leading construction company. The company focuses on building economic and social infrastructure in local communities, particularly in countries where it operates internationally, and actively engages in mandatory social contribution activities in developing countries, seeking mutual development with third-world and developing nations.
In overseas operations, Hyundai E&C goes beyond mere construction activities and collaborates with international development agencies to support CSR initiatives addressing poverty, education, hygiene, culture, housing, and the environment in local communities. The company also annually dispatches an international volunteer group, H-CONTECH, reflecting the unique characteristics of the construction industry, to spread Hyundai E&C's technology and Korean culture. Moving forward, Hyundai E&C will continue to engage in "Locally Based Social Contributions" to collaborate with local communities and contribute to mutual development, fulfilling its social responsibility as a "Global Citizen."

CSR Strategy and Major Programs : 3 Domains

Build for our Planet [Disaster Safety Management Prevention Program]

Hyundai E&C is bolstering its CSR efforts on disaster safety by applying its construction expertise. Specifically, the company has developed a child-protective hard hat to ensure safety of children in times of disasters like earthquakes. This hat is portable and user-friendly, thanks to its two-stage folding design and 290g light weight. It is also the first hard hat in Korea with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag for rescue operations and quality excellence proven with KC (Korean) and CE (European) voluntary certifications.
Every year, Hyundai E&C provides specialized disaster management training for elementary school students and teachers who are vulnerable to disaster safety, such as teaching them about wearing hard hats and earthquake songs with to-do instructions in case of an emergency. Not only that, the company also conducts joint mock evacuation drills. Hyundai E&C will continue to fulfill its social responsibility in the field of children's disaster safety by conducting regular and comprehensive disaster safety training.

Build for our Planet [Environmental Conservation and Climate Change Action Program]

To realize its ambition of becoming a leading “Global Green One Pioneer”, Hyundai E&C has developed a comprehensive roadmap extending to 2050 and implemented environment and energy-based polices. Committed to protecting the global environment, the company focuses on enhancing environmental efficiency via organized management and strives to reduce the environmental footprint of its corporate operations. We are actively engaged in projects aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for vulnerable groups and social welfare institutions, aligning with our objective to cut down greenhouse gas emissions. Our initiative, “H-Greensaving”, involves replacing standard lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED lights for the energy-impoverished and socially marginalized and social welfare facilities. This project is conducted in partnership with the Climate and Environment Headquarters, the Korea Energy Agency, and the Seoul Council on Social Welfare. It not only aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions but also to reduce the energy bills of those struggling with energy poverty. Furthermore, the carbon credits generated from this emission reduction will be donated back into energy education programs for young people aspiring to careers in environmental fields.

Build for our People [Youth Empowerment Program]

Hyundai E&C has initiated the Hillstate Dream Mentoring Corps, a program designed to support future generations who face challenges in realizing their dreams due to high entry barriers and environmental factors. This mentoring initiative focuses on cultivating the aspirations of young people and university students. It comprises a triad of mentors: an employee from Hyundai E&C, a college student, and a young mentee. Through this arrangement, youth mentees receive guidance in both academic learning and career planning from their two mentors. Simultaneously, the college student mentor gains valuable job-seeking advice and career development opportunities from Hyundai E&C and its employee mentor. The Hillstate Dream Mentoring Corps provides sustained assistance to youths, supporting their journey through education, college, and into the workforce. This annual program launches each year around September to October and concludes the following July to August, spanning a period of about 10 months.

Build for our People [Support Program for Construction and ESG Startups]

Hyundai E&C is actively involved in a CSR initiative designed to foster the growth of emerging entrepreneurs and early-stage startups in the construction and ESG sectors. We aim to create a virtuous cycle that both addresses social issues and integrates business opportunities by identifying and nurturing ideas that are grounded in innovative construction technologies commercialization through accelerating new startups.

Build for our Community [Employee Volunteer Activities and Community Outreach Programs]

Hyundai E&C conducts various sponsorship programs to support the underprivileged in Korea through employee volunteerism. The Love Sharing Fund, which has been in existence for 13 years, is a donation program in which employees voluntarily participate and collect and donate portion of their salaries. The donations are used for CSR programs to extend a helping hand to needy neighbors near domestic and overseas business sites. (about KRW 4.1 billion accumulated over 13 years) In addition, we continue to operate participatory CSR activities for the development of local communities and trust-building for local vulnerable groups and communities near overseas construction sites. Employees actively participate in solving local problems based on voluntary participation, such as support for the vulnerable in Jongno, where the headquarters is located, the “One Business to One District Partnership Project” in Gahoe-dong, blood donation and goods donation campaigns, and volunteer activities involving employees' families.

Build for our Community [Overseas Community Outreach Program]

Hyundai E&C adopts optimal technologies tailored to the needs of underdeveloped countries by leveraging the characteristics of the construction industry. It supports appropriate technologies to address the local needs such as in the areas of education, livelihood support, sanitation, and housing environment. Hyundai E&C's H-CONTECH Overseas Volunteer Corps, launched in 2017, is the first new concept of technical and cultural exchange overseas volunteer program organized by a Korean construction firm. While previous overseas CSR activities consisted of volunteering to improve facilities and the environment near the site and teaching children, H-CONTECH adds technology exchange to the existing activities to strengthen the global network at the site and locally. As a technical and cultural exchange volunteer group, H-CONTECH promotes Korean culture as well as Hyundai E&C's technology.
Since 2011, Hyundai E&C has actively participated in CSR activities in over 20 countries, beginning with the construction of a community center for low-income families in the Philippines. The company has carried out approximately 50 projects, focusing on health, sanitation, empowering the vulnerable, and refurbishing public facilities. In July 2022, Hyundai E&C notably improved the educational environment at School No. 1 in Zugdidi, Georgia, by establishing an “IT Classroom and Career Guidance Counseling Room”, contributing to the development of exceptional talent in the local community. As a global construction leader, Hyundai E&C is dedicated to leading in CSR by persistently engaging in diverse CSR projects worldwide.
