Hyundai E&C is partnering with Korea Transportation Safety Authority to develop safety technologies and establish design standards in response to the growing adoption of future mobility solutions in residential complexes.
On Monday, September 7, Hyundai E&C signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea Transportation Safety Authority at The Westin Josun Seoul to cooperate on demonstrating safety technologies for future mobility in residential complexes. Key attendees at the signing ceremony included Kim Jae-young, Head of HMG Construction Technology Research Institute—the integrated R&D arm of Hyundai E&C and Hyundai Engineering—and Song Myung-jun, Director of its Infrastructure and Urban Research Group, as well as Min Seung-ki, Head of the Mobility and Transportation Safety Headquarters at Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
As residential complexes evolve beyond simple living spaces into platforms for daily living that support a wide range of mobility and last-mile logistics services, the introduction of new modes of transportation and delivery services is making their traffic environments increasingly complex.
The agreement was initiated in response to the rapid proliferation of diverse mobility options and services in residential complexes, including Demand Responsive Transport (DRT), delivery and service robots, and personal mobility devices. It aims to protect residents as they move through complexes on foot and to develop complex design and operational technologies capable of adapting to changing traffic conditions.
Under the agreement, Hyundai E&C and Korea Transportation Safety Authority will ▲ jointly study measures to improve the safety of future mobility in residential complexes; ▲ identify traffic-safety improvements required by the introduction of future mobility; and ▲ review ways to improve road environments using Software Defined Road (SDR) technology.
The two organizations plan to create safe mobility environments by extending their research beyond any single mode of transportation to encompass the wide range of mobility solutions that may be used in future residential complexes, including DRT, delivery and service robots, and personal mobility devices. They will comprehensively analyze the elements that make up real-world residential environments—including roads and pedestrian routes within the complex, passenger pick-up and drop-off areas, waiting areas, and operating frameworks for each mode of transportation—and verify the practical applicability of such technologies through on-site demonstrations.
Based on the research findings, Hyundai E&C plans to improve pedestrian-centered traffic systems within residential complexes and use mobility-operation and space-utilization data to optimize the design of roads and circulation routes. Going forward, the company will establish design and operational standards that reflect the characteristics of each mode of transportation from the planning and design stages of residential complexes. Building on these standards, it will develop mobility-infrastructure models that connect future residential complexes with smart cities and create future living environments that can flexibly accommodate a diverse range of mobility services.
“As a growing variety of mobility services serve residential complexes, spatial planning and operational systems that allow pedestrians and mobility solutions to coexist harmoniously are becoming increasingly important,” a Hyundai E&C official noted. “Through joint research and demonstrations with Korea Transportation Safety Authority, we will create a safe and efficient mobility environment and systematically establish design and operational standards for residential complexes that account for future mobility.”
Hyundai E&C is also actively seeking to create robot-friendly residential complexes and is conducting a parking-robot demonstration project for residential complexes in conjunction with Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai WIA. Using data collected in real-world residential environments, the company is establishing deployment and operational standards for parking robots and developing them into smart parking solutions integrated with residential complex spatial planning. In this way, Hyundai E&C is expanding the scope of research that brings future mobility and residential spaces together.
