▲ Hyundai E&C-Westinghouse consortium to establish a strategic foothold for full-scale participation in new nuclear power plant projects in Finland and Slovenia
▲ Accelerating global presence in nuclear industry based on proven construction expertise Korea-US Energy partnership
▲ Expanding the new energy business division and actively recruiting skilled talent in line with its declared energy-centric growth strategy
Hyundai E&C is set to expand its presence in the European large-scale nuclear power plant construction business, extending its nuclear power plant footprint to Slovenia and Finland following its entry into Bulgaria
Hyundai E&C recently announced that together with Westinghouse, it has been selected by Fortum - Finland’s state-owned energy company - as one of three suppliers1) for deeper collaboration in the next phase of Fortum’s new nuclear evaluation.
This follows two years of comprehensive feasibility studies with multiple nuclear technology providers Fortum plans to develop new nuclear power projects in both Finland and Sweden to strengthen energy independence and security of supply in the region. These selected candidates will now proceed with further detailed evaluations essential to the project.
Hyundai E&C-Westinghouse consortium, along with other suppliers selected for the EWA, will develop a comprehensive plan for the overall construction of the AP1000® by evaluating the technical maturity required for project execution and reviewing licensing-related matters. Through this project, Hyundai E&C will once again showcase its outstanding project capabilities and build a close partnership with the client to secure a distinct competitive advantage ahead of EPC bidding process.
Hyundai E&C is also involved in the Slovenian nuclear power plant project in partnership with Westinghouse. With Europe actively advancing nuclear power expansion policies aimed at enhancing energy security, Slovenia is likewise making proactive efforts to construct a new nuclear power plant.
In Slovenia, the Hyundai E&C–Westinghouse consortium is conducting a Technical Feasibility Study (TFS) to assess the deployment of an advanced AP1000® reactor at the proposed Krško-II Nuclear Power Plant. Planned by Slovenia’s state-owned utility company GEN Energija, the Krško-II would be located at a site adjacent to the current Krško Nuclear Power Plant, which approximately 80 kilometers east of the capital, Ljubljana.
Since signing a strategic agreement in 2022 with Westinghouse to jointly enter the global opportunites for construction-ready, advanced and proven AP1000® reactor, Hyundai E&C has been steadily expanding its target markets, most notably by securing a design contract for the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria and is now beginning to see tangible outcomes from this collaboration.
Hyundai E&C CEO Lee Han-woo and other key energy executives visited the U.S. in February to discuss plans for close cooperation with Westinghouse leadership. In March, they traveled to Bulgaria for meetings with key members of the new cabinet. As such, the company continues to explore ways to strengthen cooperation and ensure the smooth development of its business.
As its energy business continues to accelerate, Hyundai E&C has recently expanded and reorganized its related departments and is actively working to grow its pool of experienced professionals with specialized expertise. Recruitment areas include: △Project delivery, process, and quality management in the nuclear power sector, including large-scale nuclear power plants and SMRs △Research and development in next-generation nuclear technologies (MSR, SFR) △Project delivery, design, process, and quality control in the new and renewable energy and power grid sectors.
