The National Museum of Qatar: A rose blooms in the desert

The National Museum of Qatar: A rose blooms in the desert

The Desert Rose, designed by Jean Nouvel, has bloomed in the middle of the kingdom’s capital Doha. The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) officially opened to the public in March based on Hyundai E&C’s technological prowess. The building consists of 316 circular disks clad in about 76,000 fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) panels. The petals, immortalized in the form of the architectural disks, create flowing and smooth curves while strong steel truss structures firmly support the building.
Hyundai E&C introduced three dimensional building information modeling (3D BIM) throughout the entire construction process, which was the first of its kind in the world, in a bid to identify errors in the drawings in advance and prevent possible problems from occurring during the construction process. The successful completion of the NMoQ project demonstrated the builder’s construction capability and technological excellence once again in the Middle East region.

The Sheikh Jaber Causeway in Kuwait: The 36.1-kilometer cross-sea bridge

The Sheikh Jaber Causeway in Kuwait: The 36.1-kilometer cross-sea bridge

The newly opened Sheikh Jaber Causeway links Kuwait’s capital Kuwait City to Subiyah New Town to the north. The Sheikh Jaber Causeway project was designed to build the 36.1-kilometer cross-sea bridge consisting of three lanes for each side, two artificial islands with a capacity of about 330,000 square meters, and buildings. The construction costs reach as much as 2.1 trillion won.
In an effort to materialize a sailing ship, a symbol of Kuwait, Hyundai E&C chose an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge system to build the 340-meter main bridge, which required advanced designing and construction technologies. In addition to its state-of-the-art construction technology, Hyundai E&C laid the firm foundation for the balanced national development by securing construction safety against high temperature, seawater and strong winds.
