Hyundai E&C builds the biggest general hospital in the northwestern part of Seoul
Hospitals are considered specialized building structures which cutting-edge medical devices and advanced facilities are all integrated into to deal with human life. Hyundai E&C has been well recognized thanks to its experience amassed from the construction of about 50 hospitals at home and abroad.
Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital is the 9th affiliated hospital of the Catholic Medical Center network and the 4th affiliated hospital of the CMC(Catholic Medical Center) network built by Hyundai E&C. The new CMC hospital project was to build a main building of 17 floors above ground and seven basement levels and an annex of eight floors above ground and five basement levels with 178,624 square meters of total floor area. Construction costs about 301.2 billion won, and Hyundai E&C has a 100 percent share of the project. The construction began on October 28, 2016.
Hyundai E&C made special efforts in designing Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital to offer up-to-date, eco-friendly facilities and satisfy the stronger standards for infection management. Along with the clean room system and the air conditioning system designed to prevent bacterial infection and transmission, the builder applied the double door design to isolation rooms in the emergency center, the first of its kind in the country, and built negative pressure rooms at the Outpatient Clinic of Infectious Diseases. In addition, it constructed screen doors for all wards in a bid to fend off nosocomial infection.
Above all things, the construction site devoted its most efforts to electric work on the ground that any possible power failure may threaten life of patients. To prepare for blackout, it built double power lines. Even when a failure in one power line occurs, the other can supply power to the hospital.
The Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital project made the possible out of the impossible. As for construction period, the project was originally scheduled to be finished in February 2019, but it had to be completed in 26 months on December 2018, due to completion approval. What’s worse was that the delayed construction permits in the early stage led the construction to be three months behind schedule. In order to solve this problem, the construction site set out to change construction methods and rush the construction work.
The construction site paid full attention to achieve “safety,” “quality” and “timely completion.” As part of this effort, it required workers to record the details of working with fire on a board on a daily basis, which led to preventing major accidents from occurring.
Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital is expected to serve as the largest medical institution in the northwestern part of Seoul and the northern area of Gyeonggi-do.
