[Job Interview] Commissioning

Q. Please tell us about your job.

Commissioning refers to a series of procedures that verifies the constructability for each process, checks that each facility is performing as designed, and ascertains that the product requested by the ordering company is produced correctly, and finally hands over to the ordering company.

For this, the commissioner in charge establishes a commissioning plan and prepares a procedure proposal. Then, commissioning is carried out in collaboration with suppliers directly on site. We also conduct technical reviews and quotations for commissioning to win project orders.

Q When was the most rewarding moment during your work?

As a commissioner at the UAE power plant site, it was quite memorable when I completed the performance test and reliability operation test.  It was my first time at an overseas location, so I experienced difficulties in the unfamiliar environment with the tasks I experienced for the first time. I can't forget when I completed the commissioning and handed over the power plant to the customer after solving various problems with my co-workers. United under the name of Hyundai E&C, the sense of accomplishment and pride for completing the project in the harsh desert environment was a priceless reward that cannot be replaced with anything.

Q What kind of competencies do you think you need to do your job?

The most crucial element in commissioning is understanding each plant's process. Understanding how each plant produces a product will be the basis for performing the commissioning work. Knowing the operating principles of various rotating machinery, equipment machinery, piping, electrical equipment, and instruments that make up the plant and their roles is a critical competency.

When a project enters the commissioning phase, many unexpected problems arise.  If you have problem-solving skills on top of engineering capacity, you will be the best commissioner.

Q Is there a corporate culture of Hyundai E&C that you are very proud of?

To me, it's the corporate culture that respects individual lives. Work hours are designed to let you enjoy personal life in the evening, and everyone uses annual leaves without reserve. It creates a nice balance between work at the company and individual lives. Leaves are also not limited to the summer season. We can go on vacations at any time we wish throughout the year, making it easier to plan them. The work environment that allows the coexistence of personal lives further improves work efficiency.
