Winning Consecutive Orders in Asia and Middle East Reaffirm Hyundai E&C’s Global Status

Hyundai E&C has recently won more than 2 trillion won in mega infrastructure projects in Asia and the Middle East, solidifying its position in the global markets.  

On September 16, Hyundai E&C received a Notification of Award (NOA) for the construction of Sections 4,5, and 6 of the Philippine Southern Urban Railway from the Philippines’ Department of Transportation. The Philippine Southern Urban Railway is a 56-kilometer-long project that connects downtown Manila to southern Calamba region. Hyundai E&C was in charge of three sections (out of a total of nine) spanning 32 kilometers. Hyundai E&C’s will own 90% of the stakes and will oversee the entire construction excluding some foundation works.  

In 2020, Hyundai E&C successfully won The Philippines' North-South Commuter Railway project and was recognized for its construction know-how and technology. Hyundai E&C which has won a series of large-scale railway projects in the Philippines, is expected to dominate the country’s local market where large-scale developments are expected in the future.

There was a good news from Kuwait, too. Hyundai E&C received a Letter of Authorization (LOA) for the additional construction and renovation of facilities at the port of Shuwaikh in Kuwait ordered by the Kuwait Ports Authority. The 220 billion won project is to improve and expand the existing port of Shuwaikh (about 1.3km), and the construction will last for 36 months. Hyundai E&C participated in the bidding through a joint venture with a local specialized company and succeeded in winning the order in recognition of its differentiated competitiveness.

A company official said, "We have won construction orders one after another despite the shrinking global construction market due to the impact of Covid-19 and will continue to improve our status and position as a leading K-construction firm based on differentiated bidding strategy and technology of excellence.”

Hyundai E&C Ranked as Global Top 13 Engineering Firm by ENR of U.S.

Hyundai E&C has been recently ranked 13th among The Top 250 International Contractors in 2022, released by the U.S. construction engineering magazine ENR (Engineering News Record). The company is set to join the Global Top 10 soon. 

The latest ranking is three notches up from last year, making Hyundai E&C the only Korean builder to join the top 20. Hyundai E&C also ranked 21st among at The Top 250 Global Contractors, based on combined sales of domestic and overseas businesses. The ranking was four notches up from last year. making Hyundai E&C on par with global leading players.  

ENR, a U.S-based construction and engineering weekly magazine founded more than 100 years ago, releases an annual ranking of construction and engineering companies based on their performance of overseas construction business. In particular, the international segment is based on overseas business sales excluding domestic sales, therefore is recognized to be an effective indicator for understanding the status of a firm on the global construction market.  

Hyundai E&C joined the global top 10 engineering firms, ranking 5th in sales in Asia (6th last year) and 6th in sales in the Middle East (10th last year), and recorded overseas sales of $5.76 billion, up 13.5% from the previous year.

Boosting Pride of Employees... Anguk Station Will Change Name to Anguk Hyundai E&C Station

Anguk Station, the subway line 3, where Hyundai E&C’s headquarters is located, has been reborn as Anguk Hyundai E&C Station.  Anguk Hyundai E&C station has high foot traffic, with 25,000 visitors every day. Hyundai E&C bought the rights to the subway station name through a public bidding last July. This means that the company’s name will be added to the existing name of the subway station. Hyundai E&C has recently completed the replacement of 120 subway station nameplates located in and outside of the stations and also at the platforms as well as on 2,000 safety doors and subway maps. 

The idea of placing Hyundai E&C’s name side-by-side with the existing station first began from a proposal of an employee, which was posted on the in-house knowledge portal (HMAP).  Employees have also greatly welcomed this change, which will help boost  their pride and affection for the company when commuting from and to work. In particular, an English-Korean announcement will be made inside the subway train over 500 times a day, which will expose the company’s name of Hyundai E&C and have a great promotional effect.

Completion of Section 1 of Dodam-Yeongcheon Double-Track Railway of Jungang Line

The first roadbed construction of the Section 1 of the Dodam-Yeongcheon double-track railway on the Jungang Line was completed in about 7 years and 8 months since groundbreaking in 2014. Hyundai E&C was in charge of the 12.5km arterial road bed and track construction (including two tunnels and three bridges) connecting Maepo-eup and Daegang-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. In particular, the Namhangang River Bridge, which was built in the form of  an elegant curve inspired by the Dodamsambong Peak and flows of the Namhangang River is attracting attention as a new landmark of Danyang. With the completion of the Dodam-Yeongcheon double-track railway site on the Jungang Line, the operating time from Cheongnyangni in Seoul to Andong has been halved, taking only about 2 hours. 

A site employee said, “We had a lot of late-night operations and difficulty in the process due to the work environment close to the track in operation, but we achieved zero accident through strict safety management,” adding that, “I thank the management and employees for their support provided throughout our seven years and eight months of great journey.”
