"Data analysis ability for smart construction management is my competitive edge."

by Manager Kim So-hui (Convergence Technology Research Team)

[Job Interview] Research and Development

Q Please tell us about your job.

I am in charge of data analysis in the Convergence Technology Research Team at the R&D Center.  When I first joined Hyundai E&C as a data analyst, the reaction from those around me was, “Do they do data analysis at a construction company?” Due to the nature of the construction industry, there are still more data that people input than data that is automatically accumulated.  However, as the company is investing in smart construction and automation, I look forward to encountering new kinds of analysis in the future as a data analyst.  Currently, we are taking up a new challenge to improve our smart construction management capacity by analyzing process, safety, and quality.

Q When was the most rewarding moment during your work?

It happened shortly after I joined the company.  When I received feedback from the staff in other departments that it would help a lot just by visualizing the data, I thought I wanted to do better. No matter how much you are in charge, it is difficult to grasp 100% of the data.  Organizing and analyzing data accumulated throughout the long history of Hyundai E&C and creating something new together with the company is very attractive to me as a data analyst.  The team members who create the environment so that each task feels rewarding is another source of pride at Hyundai E&C.

Q What kind of competencies do you think you need to do your job?

The basic programming skills to be able to manipulate data for a purpose are fundamental.  But your attitude as you deal with the data is even more important. As you analyze the data, you discover problems or issues that are difficult to analyze.  Instead of giving up and handing it over, you need to solve and improve it. A positive attitude that enjoys this process also helps with work.  Also, since there is a lot of collaboration with other departments, it is also critical that you are open to communicating with others.

Q Is there a corporate culture of Hyundai E&C that you are very proud of?

It’s nice to have seniors who treat me often. Since I’m used to paying for what I eat, it was awkward to have seniors treat me to meals just because I’m their junior, but I’m just happy for those moments now. I promise to myself that when I have juniors, I will give back what I received from my seniors. I’m also very proud of my dependable seniors, who don’t spare the words, “it’s okay.” When I make a mistake, they say, “It’s okay,” before asking why. After solving the problem together, they then tell me which part went wrong and how to deal with it next time so that I don’t repeat the mistake. This corporate culture is the driving force to learn and grow through mistakes.

Q Could you say a word to juniors who dream of working at Hyundai E&C?

There is a question that always comes up from document screening to interview.  “Why our company?” At the time, I didn’t understand why they would ask this question.  But after working as part of the company, I realized that “why?” was the most basic question. I encourage you to constantly ask yourself, “why?” And don’t lose your confidence.  I recommend you appeal what you can do well, and to acknowledge the things you can’t do and develop confidence. I hope all job-seekers preparing for Hyundai E&C will gain confidence. I’ll root for you all!
