"I think urban development sales work is more like a comprehensive art."
by Manager Seo Woo-chang (Urban Maintenance Planning Team)
Q1. Please tell us about your job.
In the urban maintenance planning team, I am in charge of supporting and planning orders for reconstruction and redevelopment projects. One of the most important tasks of a construction company is to secure future profits by winning new construction contracts. In order to capture future profits, my team's job is to identify projects with excellent business potential, establish sales strategies, and support the entire process of securing construction rights. Also, as collaboration with relevant teams is important, it is crucial to share the current status of projects and organize meetings to build consensus within the company.
Q2. What competencies do you need most in your job?
The more I work in municipal maintenance sales, the more I realize that it's really more of an interdisciplinary art. Winning an order requires a variety of competencies, and since no one individual can do it all on their own, it is necessary to strengthen each person's strengths and make efforts to contribute to the organization. I think the most necessary skills are “care” and “patience” because the nature of sales operations involves meeting people and winning their hearts through communication. If you are equipped with these two qualities, you can overcome all the difficult challenges of urban maintenance sales.
Q3. How did you prepare for joining the company?
Every little bit of experience and effort counts, so you need to prepare as best you can from where you are. The time and effort I put into my schoolwork and activities helped me get hired. By pushing myself to the limit, I didn't think about putting myself down or losing confidence by comparing myself to other applicants. I would also say that it is important to value your achievements and take pride in them.
Q4. Is there a corporate culture or system at HDEC that you would like to share?
I would like to boast of the organizational culture of “respect:” in the urban maintenance sales office which I belong to. Our office has an atmosphere where there is no hierarchy in terms of position and seniority. Based on this organizational culture, employees respect even the smallest opinions of newcomers, which is why Hyundai E&C continues to exmplore new initiatives to become the first in the industry and lead the market. I believe that a key factor here is the willingness of managers to tolerate failure and trust their team members.
Q5. Do you have any advice for juniors who want to work at HDEC?
My favorite memory is when Hyundai E&C was selected as the general contractor for a major reconstruction project after a fierce competition with other companies. It was unfortunate that the long bidding schedule was undermining the strategies and plans we had prepared, and I felt helpless during this time of incapacity. However, I learned a little more about the work of municipal maintenance sales through the experience of victory that came after hardship. I would like to experience once more with my juniors the charm of growing camaraderie as we work together to outperform other companies.
