Domestic Site Equipment, Joo Hye-min

Q1. Please tell us about your job
I am responsible for the construction of facilities for site building a large apartment complex with over 3,000 units. The facilities works include managing the construction of various mechanical facilities and equipment such as water supply, drainage, sanitation, cooling, heating, air conditioning, and fire protection in the building. Facilities have the greatest impact on the comfort that apartment residents feel in their indoor spaces, and they also play a key role in high-tech buildings such as data centers to fulfill their purpose. Facilities team is an all-around player that not only builds these facilities, but also manages them safely, on time, within budget, and of high quality. I can't wait for the building to be completed and for the clean water and air to flow through the facilities I built.

Q2. What competencies do you need most in your job?
I've found that the most crucial skill required on-site is “put yourself into others’ shoes”. Since the project involves delivering a large-scale apartment complex, the site is made up of a diverse group of people. Beyond collaborating with subcontractors, I often work alongside employees from various teams like civil engineering, construction, and electrical, to solve problems together. Given that everyone shares the common goal of completing the project on time, it's important not to focus solely on my own viewpoint but to make an effort to understand others' perspectives. It’s also essential to clearly express oneself to avoid misunderstandings and, at times to persuade others.

Q3. How did you prepare for joining the company?
The most useful aspect that helped me get hired was being a “double major” I majored in both architectural engineering and mechanical engineering as an undergraduate. I entered college as an architectural engineering major with the dream of joining a construction firm one day, and I majored in mechanical engineering as I was very interested in the construction industry, especially facilities.
I believe that my consistent interest in the construction sector, my understanding of the overall structure and flow of construction work, and my passion for pursuing a career facility management all came together and ultimately helped me to successfully join the company.
To thoroughly understand the company I was applying to, I researched and summarized the key features of the major sites that were completed or under construction before my interview. I also diligently reviewed articles from the past few years, contemplating the direction in which the company aims to move forward. Thanks to this preparation, I was able to fully express my interest and affection for Hyundai E&C during the interview process.

Q4. Is there a corporate culture or system at HDEC that you would like to share?
When I joined the company and was not familiar with the work, the “unified atmosphere of the site” was very helpful. I was able to adapt quickly because many of my seniors were warm and welcoming and worked together to make things work. Even if there are occasional disagreements or conflicts on site, we can find the best solution for each other because we all have the same goal of ”completing the project on time”. Also, I can grow in my work by learning the field expertise from my seniors' experiences.

Q5. Do you have any advice for juniors who want to work at HDEC?
My advice is to gain a wide range of experiences in order to get hired. I filled my school and job preparation years with a lot of different experiences. I did extracurricular activities, volunteer work, internships, travel clubs, and a part-time job at an amusement park. Thanks to the diverse experiences and people I met off-campus, I discovered what I love and what I want to do. Through this process, I became convinced that I wanted to join Hyundai E&C and work in facilities, and from then on, I prepared for my job search more seriously.
